Reaper mentioned as an alternative is a fine reasonably priced product. It isn't perfect, no DAW is but Sonar Platinum was worth paying for.the fact it is now free is insane. Cubase dropped 32bit support 2 years ago. (and has class leading compatibly with 64 bit VST2/VST3 as well as most 32bit plugins). The ProChannel Makes Sonar more like using an actual console than the vast majority of other DAWs that ends up being individual plugin adjustments and windows. The EQ in Cakewalk is among the best in the industry. There are themes you can download on the sonar forum I you want a different look without any work with the Theme editor. The GUI is arguably the best in the industry. More features are expected to be released for free, what is out now is the "early access" as they didn't have time to port/rebrand everything prior to the core. Over the last 2 years they had one of the most aggressive development cycles in the industry and they were already full featured before that. The warnings on install will go away in a future update once they properly register the new version with Windows, etc.Ĭakewalk is a world class cutting edge DAW with one of the longest histories of all the DAWs on the market. The date thing will go away with another update (according to the CEO). Here's a link to the FAQ on this release: On the other hand, if you're pushing LE's limits, Cakewalk is a fantastic offering with no limits baked in. If it's doing the job for you and you're comfortable with it there's no real reason to switch unless you want to board the BandLab train to see where it takes the product. Cubase LE is a limited function version of Cubase. You should absolutely check it out, but switching is another thing. The BandLab release will use those seamlessly (once you set up the vst folder locations.) You should leave the old version there if you want to leverage the bundled plugins. If you already have a Gibson/Cakewalk version of Sonar installed the BandLab release installs side by side with no issues. Also, if you've done any custom menu layouts, those need to be copied manually. When you install it, you need to set up the VST folder preferences in Edit->Preferences->VST Settings to add the vst folder locations on your particular system. As far as I know there are no plans to charge for it in the future. It's functionally identical to Cakewalk Sonar Platinum, just rebranded and with the third-party licensed products removed. The new version is called "Cakewalk by BandLab".
