I went back to syncing folders because of this and put up with the syncing. BUT, I found doing it that way the Photos app wouldn't automatically replace photos if I ever cropped them, or did anything else to edit them, even if saving as the same filename on my PC, it just uploaded a duplicate copy of the photo, so you end up using more space in your allowance. You can get around this by using the dedicated Google Photos app instead of syncing with the other Google folder sync method, that didn't seem to want to check all my photos every time I logged on when I tried it. Though I agree with you about the CPU time used to check the sync of all your files every time you reboot with Google, that is annoying. Amazon are currently pestering me with a £10 gift code to set it up, but I haven't bothered yet as I don't have that many photos to store to bother taking them off Google. Amazon do an unlimited photo storage at full resolution thingmy, if you are a Prime member, so technically not free, but may be worth it if you use all the other things Prime offers.
